Gossip with Mitali Priyadarshini
With many young writers emerging out and making a place among other prominent ones, a young girl from Bhubaneswar, who is even an engineering student, is all set to enter the world of novels with her debut novel “Dark Soul- a lament within the core” which would be released by first week of September 2014. Here we have tried to talk to her about her upcoming novel.
What inspired you to write the first book ‘Dark Soul’?
I was always into writing poems and articles since my childhood days. I loved reading novels. And one day, I wanted to be the one who writes and people will read and fall in love in with it, so there came my book into the scene. I’m a peculiar daydreamer and keep thinking of crazy stuffs so started with a fantasy story. And I love romantic things, so there is an infusion of romance in the book too.

Do you have a specific writing style?
No, I don’t have any specific writing style. But I try to keep my writing simple. My aim is always to write something so that people can’t just put it down until they finish reading. I like to write things peppy and humorous.

How did you come up with the title ‘Dark Soul’?
This is actually interesting in fact. The title wasn’t the same as it is now. Previously it was Cursed Desire and then it changed to a lot of other titles. But Dark Soul clicked in the final plus it perfectly suits the theme of the story.

Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
Yes, I can say the book has bits and pieces of my experiments with love. But on the overall, the story is 20% of me and the rest is just fictional.

What books have most influenced your life most?
I have read a lot many novels. The categories always vary be it fiction, fantasy, crime or horror anything. I love them all. But mostly I loved the harry potter books, I mean the story has so many twists that I sometimes think that how a person could have possibly thought of such a splendid story.

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
J.K. Rowling always. And yes, I too love the works of Rumiko Takahashi who is the creator of Inu Yasha
series, that series is an awesome one.

Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
I have come across a lot of writers who are currently writing and going to get published. I sincerely love the way they are writing.

Do you see writing as a career?
Anything can work with the touch of dedication, passion and a pinch of luck. Today’s Indian publishing market is flooded with novels and it’s very easy to get lost in that crowd. So yes, if I’ll be lucky enough with my debut novel, I’ll be considering writing as a primary career.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
Yes, I very well remember that day. Previously my dad always used to write any poems or articles that I wanted to submit for magazines. So one day he was busy and I just wanted to get my work done out of him, I was too adamant. And this very thing angered him and he challenged me to write my own poem. So out of frustration, I wrote a poem that day and from that day onwards I fell in love with writing.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?
Dark Soul is basically a fantasy romantic thriller. This kind of story is very new to the Indian market. The story revolves around Tom and Kay who are my primary characters. The story unravels the deep mystery of Tom’s torturous misfortune forecasted by his undead father and also adding Kristaine’s emotional weakness for Tom. Thereafter the chase for the darkness begins which reveals some of their worst fears and nasty secrets.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
When it comes to writing a book, you can face a lot of challenges even if it is a story flowing out of your own head. But my basic mantra is not to make the story typically boring or dry. My book characters always expect more from me, so I just try to live up to them and prove them that I did a good job.

Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?
My favourite author is definitely J.K. Rowling because I love the way she writes and has developed a beautiful world with a simple small boy Harry Potter. And among the Indian writers, I would prefer Ruskin Bond, he writes with so much of simplicity that I just can’t wait to fall in love with it. His words are truly magical.

Who designed the covers?
The book cover isn’t designed yet so I’m not sure about the designer too.

What was the hardest part of writing your book?
The hardest part definitely was imagining and writing the fantasy stuff actually. I had to put a lot of thought process into that, in the end I can only say that fantasy writing is not easy because there are no boundaries over here, you can put anything. But that anything has to sensible enough and has to be implemented cleverly so that it clicks with the readers.

Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?
Yes, my entire writing journey was tough and full of struggles. I had to endure a lot many things. But in the process, I became a lot mature and started to understand things in a better way. I became more patient with life itself. Nothing can be achieved just like that, struggle is a must. Without it, you can’t even savour the result.

Do you read your reviews? Do you respond to them, good or bad? Do you have any advice on how to deal with the bad?
My book is yet to be published in the first week of September, so I haven’t yet received any critics. But yes, when I did test reading with some of my friends, I received a lot of criticisms. And I had to take it because this is my first time and I wanted to learn. Every step and every criticism was a learning process itself. And that only resulted into the final product named Dark Soul.

Do you have any advice for other writers?
Writing is a pleasurable job. So always do write with your heart and with a lot of passion and dedication. Because I believe that any person can write. If you have a story with you, do tell the world. Writers have the ability to become eternal with their creation.
